Shillong: Police in Meghalaya detained five Bangladeshi nationals on June 11 after stopping a suspicious vehicle in the West Garo Hills district. Officers from the Rongram Police Station intercepted the Bolero at a permanent checkpoint in Upper Damalgre as part of routine border surveillance.

While officials verified the documents of the eight passengers, three individuals managed to escape the scene. A police official stated, "Upon strong suspicion, the vehicle was stopped and documents of the occupants were being verified. However, while the verification process was underway, three of the eight occupants fled from the spot."

The five remaining men were unable to provide valid citizenship documentation. During the investigation, officers discovered Bangladeshi SIM cards on their mobile devices. The detainees were identified as Sohail Rana, Chobi Ali, Tashiqul Islam, Ziyadur Sheikh, and Mohammad Nabi, all of whom hail from the Rajshahi district of Bangladesh.

Authorities have registered a case under the Immigration and Foreigners Act and are currently interrogating the detainees to determine how they entered the country. Meanwhile, police have launched a search operation for the three fugitives, alerting neighbouring districts and local community leaders. Officials remain optimistic about catching the remaining suspects as they continue to monitor the border for illegal cross-border movement.
