Gangtok: Sikkim filmmaker Tribeny Rai is set to release her debut feature film, Shape of Momo, in Indian theatres on May 29. Following a successful run at various international film festivals, the release marks a significant milestone for the burgeoning film scene in Sikkim and the wider North East region.
Rai believes the project signals a turning point for aspiring artists in her home state. She credits recent support from the state government for helping the local film industry gain momentum. By demonstrating the viability of filmmaking as a career, she hopes to encourage younger generations from the region to pursue their own creative ambitions.
Reflecting on the industry landscape, Rai spoke about the unique challenges female directors face on set. She noted that women often feel pressured to work harder than their male counterparts to establish their authority and prove their capabilities. Despite these ongoing obstacles, she remains committed to carving out space for women in cinema.
The filmmaker also pointed to a broader shift in audience appetite for independent stories. With support from studios like Spirit Media, diverse narratives from the margins are finding a home in mainstream theatres. She cited the success of films such as Rima Das’s Village Rockstars and Lakshmipriya Devi’s Boong as proof that regional stories are resonating with a wider national audience.
