Shillong: A series of awareness campaigns in the East Khasi Hills has bolstered community vigilance against drug abuse, resulting in successful police raids based on local tips. The initiative, organized by the NGO SPARK, reached over 400 people across Iewduh slum, Mawlong, Pongkung Mawphor, and St. Gabriel Higher Secondary School during April and May.
Supported by the Office of the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner through the Chief Minister’s Youth Development Fund, the program provided participants with expert guidance on the health and legal risks associated with narcotics. Speakers included police officials and representatives from specialized organizations who discussed the dangers of transitioning from tobacco to harder substances.
Inspector Sunny Sangma of the Anti-Narcotics Task Force detailed the severe legal consequences for those caught trafficking or possessing drugs. Meanwhile, career expert Dr. Maxwell Lyngdoh cautioned students about how addiction can derail future professional opportunities, and K. Syiemlieh from the New Hope De-Addiction Centre outlined the vital role of rehabilitation programs for families in need.
The collaborative effort has encouraged residents to form local action plans and maintain open communication with the police. SPARK praised this shift in community engagement, stating, "The most significant outcome was the unified response from residents, who began collaborating with law enforcement to identify and report drug-related threats in their areas."
