Domestic Workers in Kohima Gather to Advocate for Labor Rights and Safety

Kohima: More than 150 domestic workers met in Kohima on June 16 to observe International Domestic Workers Day. The Centre for Development Initiatives hosted the event at the CAN Building, focusing on the theme of securing rights, dignity, and fair treatment for those in the profession.

Lanueinla Imchen, a helpline administrator with the Nagaland Women and Child Development Control Room, served as the keynote speaker. She educated attendees on their constitutional and legal protections, specifically addressing concerns regarding sexual and verbal abuse, workplace exploitation, and the right to privacy. She urged the workers to remain vigilant and utilize legal channels whenever they face rights violations.

Representatives from Women Helpline 181 also detailed various government schemes designed for female empowerment and protection. Call operator Peteu explained how these support systems function and encouraged participants to reach out when they require assistance. The gathering featured personal testimonials from domestic workers, including Usha Achumi, who spoke about the daily challenges inherent in their labor. She expressed gratitude to the organizing body, stating, "CDI for continuously standing with domestic workers, advocating for their rights, and creating opportunities for their empowerment and development."

The event concluded with a performance by Helena Swu and a shared commitment from all participants to continue fighting for safer, more inclusive working environments. Organizers emphasized that the day served as a vital platform to foster dignity and respect for domestic staff across society.
