Shillong: The cost of a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder in Shillong has climbed to Rs 1,009, marking a Rs 29 increase from its previous price of Rs 980. This latest adjustment follows a Rs 60 hike implemented on March 7, bringing the total rise for consumers to Rs 89 per cylinder.
Government officials attribute the price surge to regional conflicts in West Asia that began in late February, causing international LPG costs to spike. According to an official statement, the supply cost for a single domestic cylinder has now surpassed Rs 1,600. Despite these local hikes, the government maintains that Indian households still benefit from relatively low energy costs.
Officials stated, "Indian households continue to pay among the lowest prices for cooking gas globally despite a sharp rise in international LPG prices triggered by disruptions in West Asia." Government data suggests that current prices remain cheaper than those in neighboring nations like Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. The cost of domestic gas in India also stays well below rates found in major economies such as the United States, Australia, and Canada.
