Dimapur Students Union Demands Stricter Enforcement of Tobacco Laws

Kohima: The Dimapur Sumi Students Union has issued a formal call for the strict enforcement of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act of 2003. Union president Kiyeka V. Assumi and general secretary Atono V. Swu stated that rigorous application of the law is necessary to protect public health within the region.

The leadership highlighted several critical mandates within the legislation, including the total prohibition of smoking in public areas. The Act also forbids the sale of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 18 and prohibits the sale of these goods within 100 yards of educational institutions.

To support these efforts, the union is asking shop owners, vendors, schools, and healthcare facilities to actively cooperate in maintaining tobacco-free environments. The organization is encouraging the public to report any observed violations and emphasized that widespread community awareness is essential for building a healthier society.
