Kohima: The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has issued a firm demand for schools to eliminate corporal punishment and mental harassment. Union president Hinoto P Aomi and education secretary Kevin Gonmei stated that educational settings must prioritize dignity and personal growth, rather than fear.
The union acted after receiving recurring complaints from students about abuse in the classroom. They categorized these reports as a concerning trend that necessitates immediate corrective measures. The DNSU reminded administrators that Section 17 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act of 2009 explicitly prohibits physical and mental discipline.
Violations of these protections may lead to disciplinary action under service rules. The union also warned that acts of intimidation or cruelty could trigger further consequences under the Juvenile Justice Act of 2015 and the Indian Penal Code. The DNSU made it clear that any attempt to silence students who report such mistreatment will be treated as an abuse of authority.
The organization is urging all local institutions to uphold these ethical and legal standards to maintain a safe learning environment. Students who wish to report grievances or seek information can reach the union via email at dnsudimapurnagastudents@gmail.com or through their official Instagram account, @dnsu.dimapur.
