Shillong: Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar inaugurated Rilang College at Mawsaw village in the South West Khasi Hills on Saturday. During the event, he announced that a new Community and Rural Development block will be established in the Shiliang Um Rilang area by early next year.
The college, founded by the Rilang Education Society, aims to address high student dropout rates in secondary and higher secondary education. Dhar noted that many families in rural regions struggle to afford sending children to distant urban centers. He expressed his expectation that the new institution will eventually produce professionals including doctors, engineers, lawyers, and civil servants from the local community.
Dhar praised Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton L. Tongkhar for his persistence in realizing the project. He also thanked the Iawphniaw Clan for donating the land and recognized the local leaders who helped sponsor the college. While the sponsoring body requested the institution be granted People’s College status, Dhar stated that specific formal procedures must be completed before that transition can occur.
To support the campus, the Deputy Chief Minister pledged a personal donation of Rs 5 lakh. He also promised to work with the local MLA to secure funding for fencing the college grounds. The inaugural event featured addresses from several officials, including Renikton L. Tongkhar, Deputy Commissioner AI Mawlong, and Hills Farmer Union president Commander Shangpliang.
