Delhi Police rescue two Meghalaya women from suspected trafficking ring

Shillong: Two women from Barato, West Jaintia Hills, were rescued in Delhi after falling victim to an alleged job scam that threatened to trap them in prostitution. The pair sought help from the Khasi Students Union (KSU) Delhi Unit on Sunday after being lured to the city with promises of hotel employment.

Upon their arrival, the women reported that a contact who facilitated their travel confiscated their phones and demanded repayment of travel costs. They alleged they were held against their will and pressured to engage in sex work. When they refused, they were told they could not leave until the money was repaid.

The KSU Delhi Unit alerted local authorities, leading police to locate the suspect and initiate questioning. While the woman denied the coercion claims, insisting the pair traveled voluntarily for work, she returned their mobile phones under police orders. The women were then placed in the care of the student union.

Arrangements are currently underway to bring both women back to Meghalaya. One woman was scheduled to fly home on Monday after her family provided the necessary funds. Following the incident, the KSU urged job seekers from Meghalaya to exercise caution and thoroughly verify employment offers from unknown sources before traveling outside the state.
