Agartala: A five-member CPI(M) delegation met Tripura Secretary Kiran Gitte on June 22. They want changes to infrastructure projects along the Assam-Agartala National Highway. Former Transport Minister Manik Dey led the group to the State Secretariat. They demanded urgent government intervention.
The group slammed the current overbridge design at Champaknagar Bazaar. The project splits the historic market in two. This layout destroys local trade and hinders daily movement. Traders have already staged protests and market shutdowns to fight the plan. The party wants a bypass or a pillar-based structure to save the marketplace. They warn that the current build will trigger major economic losses.
Flooding is another disaster. A 3.5-kilometre stretch lacks functional drains, turning houses and farms into swamps. Construction stalled at six different spots along the route. Radhacharan Debbarma stated, "The lack of functional drains on both sides of the road has resulted in severe waterlogging, causing damage to houses, agricultural fields, vegetable farms and business establishments." The delegation now demands large, covered drains to fix the mess.
Traffic remains a nightmare. Manik Dey pushed for a new flyover between Khowai CNG Point and Atharabhola West. The proposal sat dormant since the Left Front era. The party now wants the state government to force the issue and improve regional connectivity.
