Agartala: The CPI(M) wants the Tripura election office to punish the BJP for meddling with voter lists. Opposition leaders claim the ruling party held a secret meeting with local election workers to influence the revision process. It is a power grab.
Jitendra Chaudhury, a senior CPI(M) official, sent a formal complaint to the Chief Electoral Officer. He cited a report about a June 21 meeting in the Kalyanpur-Promodenagar constituency. BJP MLA Pinaki Das Chowdhury allegedly gathered Booth Level Officers at a private hall to give them orders. No government officials were present to oversee the session.
The opposition fears this creates a path for removing opposition voters. Chaudhury argues these officers were likely coerced, noting that many of them attended the meeting "violating the service conduct rule under duress mounted by the ruling party leaders."
The party wants the Election Commission to demand an explanation from the BJP. They cited similar incidents in Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam where they claim genuine voters were wiped from the rolls. The commission is currently preparing for a massive revision of electoral rolls across 16 states. House-to-house verification in Tripura starts September 15. The final list drops on December 23, 2026.
