Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has expressed full confidence in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance's candidate, James K Sangma, for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election. Following the official filing of nomination papers, the Chief Minister emphasized that the state's next representative in the Upper House must be a vocal advocate for long-standing local interests at the national level.
The Chief Minister noted that the new member will serve as a vital link between the state and the central government. Key priorities for the incoming MP include pushing for the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, addressing Sixth Schedule concerns, and managing issues surrounding the Inner Line Permit and the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act. Additionally, the role involves advocating for amendments to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act and tackling illegal immigration.
Addressing questions about the absence of some alliance partners during the nomination filing, Sangma dismissed rumors of political friction. He clarified that scheduling conflicts and personal family matters prevented some leaders from attending the event. "There are no differences within the alliance," he stated, while highlighting that the coalition remains unified behind the candidate.
The Chief Minister thanked the MDA partners for their unanimous support and noted that the alliance maintains a strong numerical advantage. While the possibility of a contested election remains open until the nomination process concludes, the leadership expects a successful outcome for their nominee.
