Congress Leaders Press Centre Over Ongoing Violence in Manipur

Imphal: Ayam Oken brought the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur to the forefront of a national Congress meeting held at Indira Bhavan in New Delhi. During the gathering of District Congress Committee chairpersons, Oken criticized the central government for its lack of action since the unrest began on May 3, 2023.

The meeting, chaired by Rahul Gandhi, featured discussions on the humanitarian crisis affecting various communities. Oken reported that the conflict between Kuki and Meitei groups remains unresolved, while new tensions between Kuki and Naga populations threaten to further destabilize the hill districts. He argued that residents are living in constant fear and displacement while the state and central governments remain indifferent.

Drawing a sharp comparison to the response in Jammu and Kashmir, Oken questioned why the administration has not taken stronger measures in Manipur. He alleged that the current leadership has failed to treat the residents as equal citizens, choosing to act as a silent spectator instead of intervening to restore peace.

Oken warned that continued inaction will only deepen ethnic divisions and worsen the humanitarian failure. He called on the All India Congress Committee to increase pressure on the BJP-led governments to ensure the safety of civilians and return the state to normalcy.
