Coal Protest Leader Hospitalized After Two-Week Hunger Strike

Shillong: Marshall SB Biam, president of the Jaintia Coal Owners, Miners, Suppliers and Workers Association, was admitted to Woodland Hospital in Jowai on Tuesday evening. Supporters rushed him to the facility at approximately 6:45 PM after his health declined on the 16th day of an indefinite hunger strike.

Biam began his protest on June 6 at Ladrymbai Dongwah to pressure the state government to lift a 12-year ban on coal mining. The association argues that the prolonged closure has destroyed the livelihoods of thousands of families who depend on the industry. According to the association, the decision to seek medical help was a necessary safety measure and "does not signal an end to their demand for the resumption of mining activities."

Biam remains under medical care following his transfer from the protest site. His family and fellow association members continue to advocate for the sector despite his current health challenges.
