Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has defended the state government's decision to award infrastructure contracts exceeding Rs 1,900 crore to the Hyderabad-based firm BAC Infratech Pvt. Ltd. The move follows mounting criticism and accusations of favoritism regarding the allocation of high-value projects throughout the state.
Addressing the controversy on Wednesday, Sangma insisted that the government follows all established statutory requirements and formal procedures when managing large-scale investments. He noted that these projects require substantial expertise and cannot be handled like minor local businesses, stressing that the government remains committed to transparency.
The scrutiny centers on several projects under the Public Health Engineering Department. Concerns were raised after the cost for Phase 1 of the New Shillong Township project increased from Rs 538 crore to Rs 772 crore. Additionally, BAC Infratech is managing the Tura Water Supply Scheme, a project valued at nearly Rs 400 crore.
Critics have questioned the tendering process, specifically pointing to instances where bids were allegedly handled through offline channels. Responding to claims of bias, the Chief Minister maintained that any irregularities would eventually surface, reaffirming that the government stands by its current procurement actions.
