Civil rights group demands probe into Meghalaya excise system

Shillong: The Meghalaya Civil Rights & Accountability Forum is calling for an independent probe into the state government's Integrated Excise Management System. The group questions why the government continues to collect system fees even though the technology remains incomplete. The project contract went to C-Tel Infosystem Private Limited.

Publicity secretary Pynsngew L. Pariat raised alarms about an unelected individual allegedly pulling strings within government offices. Pariat stated: "Such allegations, if substantiated, would constitute a serious constitutional and administrative concern and warrant a thorough and independent investigation."

Retailers are feeling the squeeze. Profit margins dropped from 20 percent to 15 percent to cover these new fees. Supply chains are currently broken. The forum also highlighted that the state's spotty power and internet infrastructure makes a high-tech tracking system impractical. Similar programs failed in nearby states, raising further red flags.

The group wants an immediate halt to all collections. They are demanding full transparency on where the money goes and who is really running the show. Government officials must answer for the potential revenue losses before any more cash leaves the pockets of local traders.
