Chakhroma Youth Organisation Issues 20-Day Ultimatum Over Moava Village Land Dispute

Kohima: The Chakhroma Youth Organisation has issued a 20-day ultimatum to the Nagaland government, demanding immediate action against Moava village. The group claims the village has repeatedly defied official directives and refused to pay customary land taxes to the traditional landowners of Tsüüma village.

In a formal representation to the Chief Secretary, CYO President Medochuzo Medoze and General Secretary Kekhrievikho Khro warned that the administration must intervene to prevent potential public unrest. They cautioned that continued government inaction could lead to "widespread public resentment and unrest," placing the responsibility for future consequences on the state.

The organisation is calling for the derecognition of Moava village, citing violations of orders issued by the ADC Peren in 1981 and the DC Dimapur in 2010. Their demands include placing the area under direct district administration, removing the current Head GB, and ending the hereditary chieftainship arrangement, which the group argues is not permitted for the community under the Nagaland Village and Area Councils Act of 1978.

The CYO also wants an immediate suspension of all developmental funds and official documentation services for the village. Furthermore, they are seeking the expulsion of three individuals connected to a February 13 incident they describe as being provoked by the village's defiance. The organisation maintains that under Article 371A of the Constitution, the Kuki community in Moava does not hold land ownership rights and must adhere to customary tax obligations as tenants.
