Kohima: The Chakhesang Students' Union (CSU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL) regarding the stalled Kohima to Jessami road project. The student body is demanding the immediate cancellation of a deadline extension granted to the project contractor, M/S Ratna Infra Projects Pvt. Ltd., and has called for urgent road restoration work.
CSU president Povozo Soho and general secretary Rhilo Chiero expressed deep frustration over the project's lack of progress. Although the highway project was originally slated for completion by January 4, 2026, the union reported that the contractor failed to meet its previous assurances. NHIDCL subsequently granted an extension until September 24, 2026, a move the union described as negligent given the contractor's poor performance record.
The union highlighted that the current state of the road is deplorable, forcing commuters to endure significant safety risks and financial costs. According to the CSU, the project site lacks the necessary machinery, manpower, and resources required to meet construction timelines. They specifically urged NHIDCL to restore the road and drainage systems before the monsoon season intensifies.
The CSU warned that if the extension order issued in February 2026 is not revoked within the two-week timeframe, they will initiate public protests. The union holds both the NHIDCL and the executing contractor fully accountable for the ongoing project failures and any further inconvenience caused to the public.
