Aizawl: The central government has committed Rs 10 crore worth of rice to support roughly 40,000 individuals seeking shelter in Mizoram. This aid package follows a meeting in New Delhi between Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday.
Lalduhoma briefed the Home Minister on the state's ongoing struggle to manage the humanitarian crisis with limited resources. He emphasized that Mizoram has taken on a significant burden by housing thousands of people fleeing instability and violence. Following these discussions, the official statement noted that Shah assured the state that the Centre would provide rice to help meet the food requirements of those taking shelter across the state.
The state currently hosts over 28,000 refugees from Myanmar who fled after the 2021 military coup, as well as 2,300 members of the Bawm community from Bangladesh. Additionally, nearly 7,000 Kuki-Zo people have sought refuge in the state following the outbreak of ethnic violence in Manipur in May 2023.
Beyond immediate relief, the leaders discussed broader development and security concerns. Lalduhoma requested that Mizoram be included in the Security Related Expenditure scheme to combat cybercrime and drug trafficking. While the state has not previously accessed these funds due to its generally peaceful status, Shah encouraged the government to submit further proposals through the Prime Minister's Development Initiative for North Eastern Region to secure additional project support.
