Shillong: Senior BJP leader A.L. Hek said the Centre is responding positively to concerns regarding the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. Following discussions with various groups, including the North East India Christian Council, Hek expressed optimism that regional stakeholders will soon have the opportunity to present their views to the Union government.
During a recent visit to Meghalaya, Union Home Minister Amit Shah advised state representatives to travel to Delhi to formally voice their objections. Hek, who has been advocating for the issue, previously wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the potential impact of these amendments on faith-based and charitable organizations. The Ministry of Law and Justice has acknowledged his input and promised to review the suggestions.
Hek stressed the importance of allowing organizations that support vulnerable communities to operate without unnecessary interference. He noted that lawmakers from various political parties share these concerns, emphasizing that broad consultations are essential before any legislative changes are finalized. He stated, "The Centre has responded positively to concerns over the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026."
Beyond the FCRA, Hek addressed other regional issues, including the Inner Line Permit and the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act. He argued that any measures aimed at curbing illegal immigration must balance the protection of local interests with the needs of legitimate tourists. He also maintained that future railway projects in Meghalaya should only proceed after rigorous studies examine the social and demographic impact on local communities.
