Aizawl: Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh met with representatives from all eight northeastern states in Aizawl on Monday to unveil a series of initiatives aimed at expanding the fisheries, dairy, and livestock sectors. Central to these plans is a 50-crore fish marketing centre in Mizoram and the establishment of four integrated Aquaparks across the region. The government has already inaugurated the nation's first Aquapark in Arunachal Pradesh and is encouraging Mizoram to complete its project reports to secure funding for its own facility.
Official data indicates that fish production in the region has nearly doubled over the past decade, climbing from 3.78 lakh tonnes in 2014 to 7.05 lakh tonnes in 2025. This growth was bolstered by over 2,200 crore in central funding since 2014, with Assam receiving the largest allocation. Future plans include modernizing the National Fisheries Development Board facility in Assam, digitally onboarding farmers, and investing up to 300 crore through Mission Amrit Sarovar.
The agricultural sector also showed significant progress, with milk production rising by 37 percent, egg production by 40 percent, and meat production by 15 percent. To support this momentum, the government intends to open a National Dairy Development Board regional office in Guwahati and launch new livestock vaccination programs. Union Minister of State George Kurian emphasized that these efforts aim to improve regional self-reliance and empower local entrepreneurs.
State representatives used the meeting to highlight current hurdles, such as the need for improved cold-chain infrastructure, expanded youth training, and more consistent digital services. The ministry officials committed to addressing these challenges to ensure the long-term success of the region's agricultural infrastructure.
