BRICS Summit Formally Backs Guwahati Anti-Drug Pact

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is cheering a major win on the world stage. The BRICS New Delhi Declaration now includes formal recognition of the Guwahati Declaration. This pact coordinates anti-drug agencies across BRICS nations to tighten operational and technical cooperation against narcotics. It is a big deal.

Sarma says the move helps Assam, a state pinned along a dangerous drug corridor. He took to X to share his thoughts on the agreement. "The BRICS Declaration has formally recognised the Guwahati Declaration, adopted by the Heads of Anti-Drug Agencies of BRICS nations, as an important step towards strengthening operational and technical cooperation in combating narcotics," he wrote.

The Chief Minister credited India for its work as BRICS Chair. He believes the New Delhi Declaration shows a wide consensus on issues like counter-terrorism, multilateral reform, animal conservation, agriculture, and new technology. Sarma views the document as a voice for the Global South, proving India offers pragmatic and forward-looking leadership in a shifting global order. He congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his team for securing this milestone.
