Shillong: BJP president Nitin Nabin marked 12 years of the NDA government by highlighting a transformation in Northeast India, shifting the region from isolation to a key national growth engine. Speaking at a national media conference at Bharat Mandapam, Nabin credited the party's Act East policy for driving economic integration and infrastructure development across the region.
The government reported a significant expansion in connectivity, with National Highways increasing from 10,957 kilometers in 2014 to over 16,027 kilometers today. Investments exceeding Rs 51,000 crore have brought rail access to most state capitals, while the number of operational airports grew from nine to 17 through the UDAN scheme, including new facilities like the Donyi Polo airport in Arunachal Pradesh.
Nabin noted that the region, once defined by instability, has seen a drastic reduction in violence and civilian casualties. This improvement stems from successful peace accords with various rebel groups and firm counter-insurgency measures. Describing the government's approach, he stated: "Total change in North East" has been achieved through proactive policies.
Beyond physical infrastructure, the government has focused on digital connectivity by expanding high-speed internet to thousands of villages to support local entrepreneurs. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw attended the event, which showcased the government's efforts to foster cultural cohesiveness and bridge the developmental gap between the Northeast and the rest of India.
