BJP Candidate Assaulted During Wokha Town Council Bye-Election

Kohima: Tensions flared during the bye-election for Wokha Town Council Ward No. 8 on Tuesday morning after BJP candidate Mhomo Humtsoe and two party observers reported being physically assaulted. The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. while the group was traveling to inspect the polling station ahead of the vote.

Humtsoe alleged that a group led by an individual identified as Zubemo confronted and attacked them. The candidate confirmed that he sustained injuries during the altercation. Following the report, police took the accused into custody and filed a formal FIR.

Reflecting on the violence, Humtsoe said, "We are trying to ensure a free, fair and peaceful election, but such incidents are unfortunate and undermine the democratic process."

In response to the unrest, Wokha Deputy Commissioner K. Mhathung Tsanglao issued an order under Section 163 of the BNSS, 2023. The directive prohibits the gathering of five or more people, the carrying of weapons, and any attempts to intimidate voters or officials. These preventive measures remain in place until polling concludes to ensure a secure voting environment as officials maintain heightened security across the ward.
