Kohima: The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Naga People’s Front have officially started their campaigns for the upcoming Urban Local Body by-elections. The BJP is focusing its efforts on Chümoukedima, while the NPF is active in Wokha.

In Chümoukedima, the BJP held a declaration ceremony for its Ward-11 candidate, Kezhanguto Zhotso. During the event, State BJP President Benjamin Yepthomi highlighted the party's focus on youth empowerment and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of bringing young people into active politics. Yepthomi framed Zhotso as a representative of the ward’s aspirations and urged residents to support the party’s vision for grassroots development.

Addressing the presence of both alliance partners in the race, party leaders clarified that the BJP and NPF are engaging in a friendly contest. PHED and Cooperation Minister Jacob Zhimomi described the setup as a healthy democratic exercise, noting there are no hard feelings between the coalition partners. He emphasized that the candidate selection followed a rigorous process and represents the party's commitment to emerging leadership.

Advisor for Tribal Affairs and Elections, H. Tovihoto Ayemi, also encouraged voters to back the BJP nominee, citing his capability and dedication. In response, Zhotso pledged to prioritize transparency and accessibility, while specifically promising to combat substance abuse among local youth. The by-elections are scheduled for June 16.
