Author Kartikeya Vajpai Discusses Themes of Identity and Mental Health in Shillong

Shillong: Author and lawyer Kartikeya Vajpai visited the Shillong Press Club on Thursday to discuss his latest book, The Unbecoming. The event featured a conversation between Vajpai and Padma Shri awardee Patricia Mukhim, attracting an audience of students, academics, and journalists.

Published by Penguin Random House India, the book explores themes of self-awareness and the pressures of contemporary society. The narrative follows a professional cricketer named Siddharth and his mentor, Ajay, as they grapple with questions of transformation and identity. The work includes forewords contributed by the Dalai Lama and Swami Sarvapriyananda.

Vajpai spoke to the crowd about the emotional exhaustion facing younger generations. He suggested that many people focus on proving their worth to the world without first connecting with their own internal values. He characterized the modern tendency to live without an inner voice as a significant tragedy.

Reflecting on the atmosphere of the host state, Vajpai noted that Meghalaya offers a unique space for reflection and depth. Patricia Mukhim agreed, adding that the book provides a timely resource for people dealing with the psychological disruptions of today's fast-paced world. The event concluded with a book signing and an interactive session where attendees discussed resilience and finding personal meaning.
