Assamese Film Muga Selected for 19th Mumbai International Film Festival

Guwahati: The Assamese short film Muga has been selected for the Prism Section at the 19th Mumbai International Film Festival, scheduled for 2026. Directed by Samujjal Kashyap, the production explores the lives of artisans in Sualkuchi and highlights the state's traditional silk weaving heritage.

The story follows a young weaver as she balances the pressures of tradition with the challenges of poverty and shifting socio-economic realities. The film was produced under the banner of Trinav Entertainment by Jayanta Kakati and Priyam Das. Regarding its narrative depth, the production has garnered significant critical attention across India.

Muga previously earned the Best Short Film Jury Award at the 14th Mumbai Shorts International Film Festival 2025 and the Best Editor Award at the 9th Chalachitramm National Film Festival in Guwahati. Beyond these honors, the film appeared at the 12th Goa Short Film Festival and received a nomination at the 18th Jaipur International Film Festival. As the filmmakers noted, the project serves to spotlight the region's cultural legacy, "highlights Assam's traditional silk weaving heritage and the lives of artisans in Sualkuchi."
