Assam Police chargesheet rate hits 54 percent since 2016

Guwahati: Assam police filed chargesheets in just over half of all criminal cases registered since 2016. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the data with the state Assembly on Monday. The BJP took power that year. Since then, officers logged 968,938 total cases. They filed chargesheets in 520,782 of those files.

The state also tracked a decade of crimes against women. Official records show 204,134 registered cases. This includes 2,961 murders and 15,397 rapes. Police filed chargesheets in 133,675 of these specific investigations. Sarma oversees the Home portfolio and answered queries from Congress MLAs Rekibuddin Ahmed and Baby Begum.

Sarma provided further updates on police work since he took office in 2021. Authorities logged 378,483 FIRs. They filed chargesheets in 254,538 of those instances. Officers arrested 426,502 suspects over the last five years. Courts delivered 29,164 convictions. Sarma informed the House that 29,164 had been "convicted under the law."
