Assam Passes Uniform Civil Code Granting Equal Rights to Children of Live-in Couples

Guwahati: Assam has become the third state in India to pass a Uniform Civil Code, following similar moves in Uttarakhand and Gujarat. During an announcement on May 27, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that the new legislation grants children born from live-in relationships the same legal status and property inheritance rights as those born to married parents.

The state government now requires all live-in relationships to be formally registered. According to the Chief Minister, this measure is intended to ensure legal safeguards for families and provide children with clear protections. The law emphasizes that a child's right to parental property remains identical for sons and daughters, regardless of the parents' marital status.

Beyond the regulations concerning cohabitation, the bill aims to standardize marriage laws and inheritance across the state. While the framework establishes common rules for personal matters, it specifically excludes Scheduled Tribe communities from its provisions. The legislation must now receive assent from the President of India before it officially takes effect.
