Guwahati: Assam Environment and Forest Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah opened the new Kalamati Wildlife Range Office on August 7. The site sits within the Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary in Sonitpur. It is a win for the local woods. The office aims to tighten field-level forest administration while sharpening wildlife management and protection efforts.

Sonai Rupai serves as a vital biodiversity hotspot for the state. It provides a critical home for the White-winged Wood Duck, which holds the title of Assam's state bird. The new facility provides essential infrastructure for staff on the ground. Officials noted the project supports the efforts of forest personnel working at the field level, stating the inauguration "marks another step towards strengthening infrastructure for wildlife protection and conservation in the region."
