Outrage as rare golden langur dies from electrocution in Assam

Guwahati: A rare golden langur died Friday morning after touching a live power line near Kuchiya Kata village. The primate lived within the Kakoijana Reserved Forest in Assam's Bongaigaon district. The shock sparked immediate anger among locals and wildlife advocates.

Devajit Moran, a prominent conservationist from Upper Assam, slammed the local administration for failing to prevent the death. He called the incident a sign of official apathy. Moran told reporters, "How many more golden langurs must die before the authorities finally act?"

Villagers gathered at the site to hold a somber farewell for the animal. They warned officials that they plan to block the national highway unless immediate safety measures are installed. They claim previous requests for stronger protection were ignored.

Moran also pointed to illegal sand, timber, and stone extraction as ongoing threats to the area. He demanded a personal visit from the Forest Minister to address these risks. Representatives from the Forest Department, the Electricity Department, and the district administration, including the Deputy Commissioner, arrived at the scene to evaluate the situation.
