Guwahati: A rare golden langur died Friday morning in Bongaigaon, Assam. The animal suffered a fatal electrocution in Kuchiya Kata village near the Kakoijana Reserved Forest. Residents gathered to pay respects to the primate before its burial.
The death sparked immediate outrage. Conservationists claim government officials ignored repeated warnings regarding primate safety. Local residents are fed up. They threatened to block the national highway unless authorities take steps to stop these preventable deaths.
Forest Department officials, the Electricity Department, and district administration staff arrived at the scene to assess the damage. This included the Deputy Commissioner. According to local residents, "repeated appeals to the government and the administration for stronger conservation measures have gone unheeded."
