Guwahati: Assam Minister Biswajit Daimary defended the right to protest on Monday, July 26. He spoke after questions arose about Cabinet Minister Keshab Mahanta's daughter participating in a student demonstration. Daimary insisted that citizens enjoy basic freedoms. "We live in a democratic nation. People have the right to do as they wish," he said.
The state faces a different battle with water. Heavy rainfall and runoff from the hills of Nagaland triggered massive flooding. Thousands of people scrambled for safety as water levels surged without warning. Daimary called the disaster a terrible situation. He noted that the unprecedented volume of water left residents with no time to reach shelter.
Daimary also tackled the issue of failing academic integrity. He welcomed the Centre's decision to form a High-Powered Task Force on examination reforms. Recent incidents of question paper leaks forced the government to act. He believes the upcoming Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill provides a necessary legal framework. This law aims to penalize those who compromise exam security, making it easier for officials to hold wrongdoers accountable.
