Shillong: Legal proceedings regarding the death of prominent Assamese singer Zubeen Garg reached a new stage on Tuesday. A court in Guwahati heard testimony from five prosecution witnesses as the trial moves forward in one of the state's most prominent criminal cases.
Special Public Prosecutor Ziaur Kamar confirmed the development following the session. He noted that the gathering of evidence remains a steady process, with more witnesses expected to appear in subsequent hearings. "The trial is continuing, and today five witnesses were examined by the court. The process of recording evidence is underway," Kamar said.
The court also addressed legal matters concerning Siddhartha Sarma, a former manager of the singer and a key defendant in the case. The Gauhati High Court has requested all relevant case records and scheduled a future hearing for his bail petition. This follows a previous decision by the High Court to decline an earlier application after a Fast Track Court rejected his initial plea due to the severity of the charges.
Zubeen Garg died on September 19 last year while swimming near Lazarus Island in Singapore, just before a scheduled appearance at the North East International Festival. Following an investigation by the Special Investigation Team of the Assam Police CID, authorities filed a chargesheet naming seven individuals, including four who face murder charges.
