Assam Assembly Ends Budget Session Early for Flood Relief

Guwahati: Assam legislators headed home early. The Budget Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly adjourned sine die on Wednesday, July 29. It ended two days ahead of the original July 31 schedule. The Business Advisory Committee pushed for the move to let MLAs monitor relief work in their flooded constituencies.

The session started on July 6. During this time, the state handled critical business. Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah presented his maiden budget on July 10, outlining an expenditure of Rs 2,85,084 crore for the 2026-27 financial year. This marked the first budget for the Himanta Biswa Sarma government in its second term.

Assembly Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass confirmed the change. He said the shortened schedule would ensure legislators can help victims directly. "The reduced schedule would allow MLAs to closely monitor ongoing flood relief operations and assist people affected by the disaster in their respective constituencies," Dass noted. Lawmakers also passed several bills regarding land regulation and administrative reforms before leaving the floor.
