Arunachal Pradesh rocked by Rs 300 crore fisheries department scam allegations

Itanagar: A major financial controversy has emerged in Arunachal Pradesh following claims that more than Rs 300 crore was siphoned from the Fisheries Department. The Joint Action Committee alleges that funds were diverted through fictitious fisheries projects and ghost ponds between 2018 and 2024, with roughly Rs 183 crore missing in Kra Daadi district and over Rs 100 crore in Lower Subansiri.

The Special Investigation Cell of the Itanagar Vigilance department is currently probing these irregularities. Investigators are examining reports that departmental and treasury officials executed unauthorized transactions in areas like Palin and Jamin without the knowledge or approval of senior leadership, including the minister and departmental secretary.

Tage Taki, the former Fisheries Minister, described the situation as "most unfortunate and painful." He noted that his department typically operated with an annual budget of under Rs 20 crore, suggesting that the massive expenditures uncovered by audits demand rigorous scrutiny. Taki has denied any personal involvement and pledged to cooperate with the ongoing inquiry.

In response to the allegations, the Joint Action Committee submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Pema Khandu. The group is calling for a transparent, time-bound investigation and has warned that they will organize public protests if officials do not take strict action against those responsible for the missing funds.
