Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh has moved to bolster its digital infrastructure by signing a memorandum of understanding to create an Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence at the National Institute of Technology in the state. The agreement, finalized on June 8, brings together the State Council of IT and e-Governance and the institute to advance the government's vision of a digitally empowered region.

NIT Arunachal Pradesh Director Prof. M.V. Aware and SCITeG Director-cum-Member Secretary Neelam Yapin Tana signed the document. The event occurred in the presence of Information Technology and Communication Secretary Dr. Sonal Swaroop. According to an official statement, the initiative forms part of "Chief Minister Pema Khandu's vision of building a digitally empowered Arunachal Pradesh through the strategic adoption of Artificial Intelligence."

Financial and technical backing for the center will come from IndiaAI, an initiative operating under the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The State Council of IT and e-Governance, currently led by chairman Nyamar Karbak, will oversee the project to ensure it promotes innovation across government, academia, and local industry.

The new hub will function as a think tank and incubator. It intends to support research, startup growth, and specialized training in emerging technologies. By utilizing the academic research capabilities of NIT, the state hopes to drive governance reforms and create new career paths for local technology entrepreneurs and students.
