Arunachal Pradesh Delegation Joins Global Parliamentary Summit in South Africa

Itanagar: A four-member delegation from Arunachal Pradesh is in Cape Town, South Africa, for the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference. The summit started Monday and runs through September 19. It brings together leaders from 56 Commonwealth countries.

Assembly Speaker Tesam Pongte leads the group. He is joined by Deputy Speaker Kardo Nyigyor, Khonsa East MLA Wanglam Sawin, and Lumla MLA Tsering Lhamu. Tadar Meena, secretary of the state Legislative Assembly, also made the trip. The Parliament of South Africa and the local branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association are hosting the event.

Delegates are focusing on the theme: "Strengthening International Law and Parliamentary Democracy in a Changing World Order: Commonwealth Leadership." The forum provides a space to trade ideas on better governance and democratic institutions. Members will also hold elections for the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

Pongte attended the official opening ceremony this week. He expressed his thoughts on the mission. "It is a privilege to lead the Arunachal Pradesh delegation and represent the state Legislative Assembly at the international parliamentary forum," he said.
