Shillong: Unknown individuals set fire to the Ranikor office of SAI Computer Limited early Tuesday morning, destroying computers and other equipment valued at approximately Rs 3 lakh. While the blaze consumed the interior of the Pamdaba facility, the building itself remained intact. Rajeev Ranjan Kumar, the project manager for the Uttar Pradesh-based firm, has filed a police report, though authorities have yet to make any arrests.
The incident follows weeks of mounting tension regarding the company’s management of power distribution for the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited. Local pressure groups and village leaders have staged protests against the firm, citing sharp increases in electricity costs for residents in the Mawsynram and Ranikor areas.
Following representations from regional leaders, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has reportedly pledged to end the company's contract in the Mawsynram Division. Former MLA Himalaya M Shangpliang, who led a delegation to meet with the Chief Minister, confirmed the decision to the press. “The Chief Minister has agreed to terminate the contract. We believe an official order directing SAI Computer Ltd to cease operations in the Mawsynram Division will be issued within the next few days,” Shangpliang said.
Mawsynram MDC Alvin K Sawkmie commended the government for responding to the community's concerns. He requested that the public remain patient as the administration completes the legal steps required to finalize the termination.
