Imphal: DM College of Arts at Dhanamanjuri University recently hosted a two-day lecture and film series focused on the intersection of visual arts and Manipuri cinema. Organised by the Department of Philosophy, the event brought together students, scholars, and local cinephiles to examine the philosophical influence of regional filmmaking.
The programme opened with remarks from Dr. Ch. Bhagyachandra Singh and Principal Dr. S. Lanchenba Meitei, who discussed the importance of cinema within academic study. Dr. Kh. Gokulchandra Singh and Associate Professor Dr. Sarat Sarma provided historical context on the evolution of the region's film industry. The first day featured screenings of documentaries including Aribam Syam Sharma and Manipuri Pony.
A major highlight of the event was an interactive session with acclaimed filmmaker and Padma Shri awardee Aribam Syam Sharma. A former head of the Philosophy department himself, Sharma shared his expertise on the role of visual storytelling in documenting culture and preserving societal identity. Attendees also viewed his notable documentary Yelhou Jagoi and his celebrated feature film Imagi Ningthem.
The series encouraged interdisciplinary engagement, bridging the gap between philosophical theory and creative practice. N. Rajen Singh, head of the Department of Philosophy, closed the event by thanking the participants for their active contributions to the discussions.
