Kohima: Nagaland Commissioner and Secretary for Health and Family Welfare, Anoop Khinchi, called for increased afforestation efforts to address rising temperatures in Kohima. Speaking at a World Environment Day event hosted by the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR) and the P-Khel Youth Organization, Khinchi warned that climate change and global warming present growing challenges that require immediate action.
The event focused on the theme Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Our Future. During the program, participants explored the importance of ecological balance, sustainable living, and the practical application of indigenous knowledge. Dr. T. Bendangla, Director of AYUSH, discussed the health benefits of traditional medicinal plants and presented a lavender plant to the institute to symbolize a commitment to environmental stewardship.
National Health Mission Mission Director Dr. Keveduyu Theyo echoed these sentiments, noting that plantation activities are essential to preserving Kohima’s local climate. The event included a communal pledge led by P-Khel Youth Organization President Thejanguzo Pienyu, where attendees reaffirmed their dedication to sustainable practices.
The celebration also highlighted the new Indigenous Herbal Garden on the NIMSR campus. NIMSR Director and Dean, Professor Soumya Chakraborty, stated, "The establishment of the Indigenous Herbal Garden at NIMSR was inspired by the vision of Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio." This project received support from Health and Family Welfare Minister P. Paiwang Konyak and various stakeholders, marking a significant step in the institute's ongoing mission to promote climate-conscious initiatives.
