Agartala: Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the Lankamura Border Outpost in Tripura on June 5 to review security operations and unveil a new technology-driven defense initiative. During his tour, he announced that pilot projects for a smart border system will launch at seven or eight locations across India. This model integrates drones, sensors, and smart fencing to create what the minister described as a quadrangular foolproof security grid.

Shah emphasized that modern defense requires more than just physical barriers. He stated that border security cannot function in isolation and requires close coordination between district administrations, local police, village officials, and border guarding forces. The government plans to test this model to resolve operational challenges before rolling it out to all areas managed by the Border Security Force and the Sashastra Seema Bal.

The initiative also includes significant infrastructure improvements. Shah announced that 119 kilometers of border fencing, which is over 15 years old, will be replaced as part of a wider modernization effort. These updates aim to better combat cross-border smuggling, drug trafficking, and human trafficking, particularly in sensitive regions like Tripura.

During his visit, Shah inspected advanced surveillance equipment and weapons used by BSF personnel. He also held a briefing with officials and shared a meal with the troops stationed at the frontier. The minister concluded his visit by participating in a World Environment Day plantation drive, where he planted an agarwood sapling at the post. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and representatives from the Intelligence Bureau accompanied him during the security review.
