Itanagar: The All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) has firmly rejected demands from the Assam-based Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK) to exempt the Mising community from the state's Inner Line Permit (ILP) system. AAPSU president Meje Taku stated that the permit regime is a non-negotiable constitutional and statutory protection for indigenous people that cannot be weakened by historical or ethnic ties.
While acknowledging the deep cultural connections between the Mising people and Arunachal tribes like the Adi, Nyishi, and Galo, the student organization maintained that these links do not bypass state law. The ILP, rooted in the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873 and reinforced by Article 371(H), applies to all individuals not classified as Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribes.
AAPSU warned that granting exemptions based on heritage could create a dangerous precedent, undermining a mechanism that has protected the state for over 150 years. The union urged all parties to remain calm and avoid rhetoric that could threaten communal harmony. They also called on the state government to enforce the ILP regulations strictly and uniformly across the region.
