Kohima: Communities across Zunheboto observed World Environment Day by participating in various initiatives focused on conservation and sustainability. The events, held under the theme Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Our Future, brought together government departments, churches, and local organizations.
During a plantation drive at SBAK Nito Mount hosted by the Green Club Zunheboto and the District Forest Department, Ranger Ikali N Kinimi urged participants to look beyond the initial act of planting. She emphasized that long-term stewardship is essential for environmental health. "Planting alone is not enough, we must nurture and protect what we plant for the future," Kinimi stated.
The District Forest Office has actively supported these efforts by distributing saplings to local villages and organizations. Rev. Kughato K. Chophy, executive secretary of SBAK Nito Mount, highlighted that the organization has designated this as a year of plantation and development. He noted that multiple villages have contributed to these efforts, and the center plans to monitor the growth of trees planted along the route between Zunheboto and Satakha.
In addition to reforestation efforts, the Zunheboto Town Sumi Baptist Church youth ministry organized a town-wide cleanup. Various schools, colonies, and the Zunheboto Town Council also joined the day's activities to promote a cleaner and more sustainable community.
