Wokha District Marks World Environment Day with Mass Tree Planting

Kohima: Communities, government agencies, and student unions across Wokha district observed World Environment Day 2026 with a series of plantation drives and awareness programs focused on climate action. Participants across the district engaged in local initiatives to promote environmental sustainability and conservation.

In the Ethungyo area of Yikhum Village, community members partnered with the Wokha Forest Division to plant trees at Atongro Lankvu and Tongti Yakchi Lankvu. This effort included officials from the Forest Department, including the Divisional Forest Officer and the Wildlife Warden. Similar tree planting activities took place at Englan Village and Meshangpen Village, the latter organized by the local students' union in coordination with the Forest Department.

The Naga People's Front, Wokha Division, conducted a plantation drive along National Highway-2 at Satsuphen Area. This event followed the theme, "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future," emphasizing the group's commitment to sustainable practices. The Wokha District Legal Services Authority also partnered with the Lotha Students' Union to hold an observance at the union's premises focused on collective climate responsibility.

At Humtso Village, the local youth organization and students' union collaborated with the Humtso Primary Health Centre to host an event themed, "Healing Through Green: Plant for Health, Grow for Hope." After a prayer led by Pastor Bikhamo Yanthan and a launch by Head GB Nyanthung Humtsoe, participants planted 78 saplings on the health center grounds. The president of the Humtso Students' Union pledged ongoing support for future environmental and health initiatives alongside the health center staff.
