VPP Leader Criticizes Symbolic Environmentalism in Meghalaya

Shillong: Voice of the People Party leader Batskhem Myrboh has challenged the effectiveness of symbolic environmental campaigns in Meghalaya. Following widespread World Environment Day events, Myrboh argued that sloganeering, rallies, and ceremonial tree planting fail to address the core drivers of ecological damage.

Myrboh took to social media to state that environmental issues will remain unresolved as long as voters continue to support leaders who prioritize wealth accumulation over nature. He remarked, "Environmental issues cannot be solved merely by raising slogans, participating in processions, or symbolically planting trees while allowing policies and decisions that contribute to environmental destruction to continue unchecked."

The critique arrived shortly after various government departments and community organizations held plantation drives and cleanliness programs to mark the occasion. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma participated in these events, emphasizing the government's focus on climate resilience and conservation. However, Myrboh’s perspective aligns with concerns held by many advocates who believe success should be measured by long-term outcomes rather than single-day activities.

Environmentalists frequently argue that genuine progress requires stricter forest protection, sustainable mining practices, and enforced regulations. In Meghalaya, where development often clashes with ecological preservation, Myrboh’s comments highlight a demand for policy shifts that go beyond annual displays of environmental awareness.
