Itanagar: Continuous rainfall has triggered severe landslides and debris accumulation along the Akajan-Likabali-Bame road in Arunachal Pradesh. This 105-kilometer corridor serves as a vital lifeline for several districts and acts as a key route toward the Indo-China border. Despite the strategic importance of the route, travelers in the Lower Siang district now face daily ordeals navigating damaged stretches and significant erosion.
The project was executed by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited under the Special Accelerated Road Development Programme for the North East. Although officials listed the two-lane highway as complete, residents report that road washouts and landslides have been a recurring issue for four years. The situation is particularly dire around Siji, Hathi Nallah, and the Brahmaputra View Point, where frequent blockages regularly sever connections to the upper districts of the state.
Lower Siang District Disaster Management Officer Tarik Nyitan confirmed that recent blockages have severely hindered local transportation. Local commuters are questioning the quality of the infrastructure, suggesting that the current state of the road is the result of inadequate maintenance. Residents told India Today that road washouts, landslides and damaged stretches have become a recurring problem over the past four years, even after the project was officially listed as completed.
