Shillong: Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president Vincent H Pala officially launched his campaign for the Shillong by-election in Mawkyrwat on Saturday. Addressing supporters at the local market, the Congress candidate predicted that the BJP would soon lose power due to its exclusionary governing style and focus on the interests of a single religion.
Pala specifically raised concerns regarding the proposed Anti-Conversion Bill, warning that it poses a significant threat to Christian minorities. He argued that such legislation could force religious groups to seek government permission for events like Catholic processions or Presbyterian Synods, potentially inviting strict penalties for non-compliance.
The Congress leader also criticized the party's stance on cow slaughter, pointing to restrictions imposed in Bengal during Eid celebrations as evidence of the BJP's bias. He suggested these policies ignore the economic realities of the country, noting that many Hindu farmers rely on livestock sales to Muslim and Christian consumers.
Accompanied by South West Khasi Hills District Congress Committee president Kynpham V Kharlyngdoh, Pala urged voters to support the Congress to protect national development and unity. He maintained that by prioritizing specific religious agendas over the needs of the entire nation, the BJP is setting the stage for its own political failure.
