Guwahati: Residents of Ujan Para in Assam’s Bongaigaon district have once again reconstructed a makeshift bamboo bridge over the Kujia River using personal funds and community labor. This structure serves as the only connection for students, farmers, and local families, but it remains vulnerable to the strong currents of the monsoon season.
Villagers must rebuild the crossing three to four times each year, a cycle that has caused significant hardship and prompted locals to describe their situation as the hollow reality of development. Despite these challenges, residents claim that repeated appeals to elected officials have yielded no results.
Locals allege that political candidates frequently promise a permanent bridge during election campaigns, only to abandon the project once the voting concludes. Frustrated by the cycle of neglect and the persistent safety risks, the community is now calling on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to intervene. They are requesting the construction of a permanent concrete bridge, stating it is essential for ensuring safe connectivity and preventing further loss of lives.
