Agartala: Vishva Hindu Parishad members blocked the national highway in front of the Bishramganj police station on Monday. The group stopped traffic to demand the arrest of Shahid Mia. Mia allegedly assaulted 70-year-old Laxmi Sarkar in the Naljala area. Sarkar's bangles broke during the struggle.

Local sources note Sarkar is Hindu and Mia is Muslim. The protesters cited the age of the victim to justify their urgency. They insisted the law must step in. "VHP members said an alleged assault on an elderly woman warranted action under the law and demanded that the accused be arrested without delay."

The blockade stalled cars and trucks for a period of time. Police arrived at the scene to speak with the demonstrators. Officers promised to catch the suspect as soon as possible. The VHP supporters cleared the road once they received these assurances. Traffic is moving again.
